Getting Rid of the Rats with Homemade Poison

If you have been an avid reader of our wildlife removal articles, you are probably aware on how much we discourage our readers from using chemicals when dealing with the wildlife infestation. No matter how bad the situation is, the threats related with chemicals will simply make it worse. Commercially available rat poisons contain active ingredients that can cause damage to our respiratory and central nervous system.

Using Homemade Rat Poison

For those who still prefer to use it, we advised using homemade ingredients to concoct a rat poison. Understand that there are not enough studies that will prove its efficacies. Some people claimed that they were successful in getting rid of the rats while others failed in their endeavors. Nonetheless, this homemade rat poisons only requires simple and organic ingredients that minimizes the risks.

Boric Acid

Start by wearing your disposable gloves in order to prevent any skin irritation. Place at least a cup of the boric acid into a container. Add some chicken broth on the boric acid that will make it more irresistible for the rats. Add around ½ tsp and stir it well before adding another half teaspoon. In case the consistency appears too thin, you should increase the boric acid. Once you achieved the desired consistency, roll the solution into a ball that is around the size of marble. Place some of the balls into the disposable container. This allows you to relocate the bait immediately.

Baking Soda

Another popular homemade rat poison would be the baking soda. According to the theory, the rats do not have an ability to pass gas. Therefore, the accumulation of air in their stomach can be lethal to them. Again, start by wearing your disposable gloves. Mix a cup of the baking soda, a cup of sugar, and a cup of flour. Place the bait into the jar and put it along the tracks of the rats or near their nest. You will have to monitor the situation for a couple of days to see if there are improvements in your situation.

Plaster of Paris

When concocting the poison, the very first thing that you should consider would be your safety. Therefore, wearing gloves will keep your skin safe from the chemical reaction. Just like the baking soda solution, mix the plaster of Paris with a cup or flour and sugar. The sugar will provide that sweet scent that will attract the interest of the rats. Chocolate can also be used as a replacement for the sugar. Put a spoonful of the solution into an empty container and place it on the key areas of your house.

Again, there are no assurance that these homemade rat poison will work. Rats are clever creatures. Their olfactory nerve helps them determine if there is a poison on the bait. It also takes time for them to be familiar on new things in their environment. Therefore, the poison may lose its potency before they interacted with it. If all else fail, do not hesitate to seek the help of the experts.
